Automotive Safety Specialists to Receive SAE Delco Electronics Intelligent Transportation Systems Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., Jan. 30, 2007 - Richard Deering and Michael Shulman, two automotive safety specialists from General Motors and Ford, respectively, have been selected to receive SAE International's Delco Electronics Intelligent Transportation Systems Award. They will be presented their award at the SAE 2007 World Congress in Detroit, April 16-19.

This award, established in 1996, distinguishes an individual or team whose outstanding technical accomplishment has significantly advanced state-of-the-art intelligent transportation systems.
This award is funded by the SAE Foundation. In addition to supporting the awards, recognition and scholarship programs of SAE International, the SAE Foundation develops and funds programs and incentives that foster student interest in engineering, scientific and technical education.

Richard Deering
Deering is a General Motors Technical Fellow in the area of vehicle structure and safety integration. In this role, he addresses emerging issues in safety and manages the integration of crash avoidance safety features with driver performance. He also represents General Motors in several industry, government and academic forums on safety. Deering has more than 28 years of automotive experience in a variety of engineering, research and managerial positions. Prior to joining General Motors Corporation in 1983, he entered the industry as a co-op student with Chrysler Corporation in 1978.

Along with fellow award-recipient Shulman, Deering co-founded the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership to create a mechanism for pre-competitive active safety research with the U.S. Department of Transportation and other vehicle OEMs. He has co-authored five publications on safety research.

Deering is a three-time recipient of the General Motors Technical Center Award of Excellence and a recipient of General Motors Special Achievement Award. He has also received the Technical Supplier of the Year Award from the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development & Engineering Center.

A member of SAE International since 1979, Deering is a past member of the Safety and Human Factors Committee. He has also contributed to ITS-America. He holds a bachelor's in automotive engineering from Western Michigan University and a master's in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan. He resides in Clinton Township, Mich.

Michael Shulman
Shulman is a Technical Leader in the active safety department of Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. In this role, he is responsible for Ford active safety research and advanced engineering for product programs. An employee of the Ford Motor Company since 1976, Shulman has 30 years of experience in the automotive industry.

Along with fellow award-recipient Deering, Shulman co-founded the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership to create a mechanism for pre-competitive active safety research with the U.S. Department of Transportation and other vehicle OEMs. He has co-authored more than five publications on safety research.

Shulman is a recipient of the Henry Ford Technology Award, the highest technical award within the Ford Motor Company.

Shulman received his bachelor's in physics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and his doctorate in physics from Brandeis University. He resides in Ann Arbor, Mich.
